5 Podcasts for Creatives, Designers and Marketers

As an entrepreneur working from home, often times it can be a little quiet and isolating. When I first started, I would just have Netflix playing in the background while I work for extra ‘noise’. But then I watched WAY too much on Netflix and we cancelled it. With the lack of Netflix in the background for noise, I got super duper hooked on listening to podcasts. Because I love them so much, I thought I’d share my favourite design-related podcasts!

The Honest Designers Show

This is my NUMBER ONE podcast for a reason. I absolutely love it and I love the hosts. It’s hosted by four ultra-talented designers –  Tom Ross of Design Cuts, Ian Barnard, Lisa Glanz and Dustin Lee of Retro Supply.

The podcast is (as the intro says) “an honest and transparent look into life as a modern designer”. The team tackles tricky topics like people copying your work, dealing with burnout and developing a design style. They started the podcast roughly when I started my business full-time, so if you’re a fellow freelancer looking for some company and help, I definitely recommend listening. The casual conversation-style podcast literally makes you feel like you’re sitting in a room with all four of them. I tell every designer I know to listen to this podcast, it’s a MUST!

Creative Pep Talk

This podcast is hosted by Andy J. Miller. I don’t listen to it as religiously as The Honest Designers, but rather, I pick a topic or guest and jump right in. Andy also goes through and tackles some tricky topics in the world of design, but what I really like is his guest features. Every couple episodes, he’ll have a speaker come in and it’s just nice getting to hear from some of the well-known designers of today like Lauren Hom, Lisa Congdon and Mary Kate McDevitt.

Bonus! They have a book which sits on my desk every hour of the day that has lettered quotes from well-known designers to give you a pep talk whenever you need it!

CBC Radio: Under the Influence

If you’re bit of a history buff and you also like the marketing and advertising side of things, I definitely recommend this podcast. It’s hosted by Terry O’reilly and he goes through different topics in the history of the ad industry. He talks about how advertising and marketing has shaped us in different ways and analyzes different ads and campaigns. If you like learning things like how Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer started as a marketing ploy, or how the whole reason hockey has intermissions is so they can get more beer sales, then this podcast is for you!

Overtime

This podcast is from Dribbble, the online community of designers sharing screenshots of their work, process, and projects. This podcast is an interview-style show that features different well-known designers from Dribbble. They pair each interview with a specific topic and go through there.

The Lively Show

This podcast is a little less about design, but more about the business, entrepreneurship and creative living side of things. If you listen to this one, I recommend going allllllll the way back to the beginning and starting there. Jess Lively, the host, goes through and interviews different bloggers, small business owners and creatives as they all try becoming a little more mindful. There’s oodles of advice in there that keep you from going insane as a freelance designer.

Any Many More...

This is only the tip of the iceberg for podcasts I love, but hopefully it'll give you a good starting point. If there are any other podcasts you LOVE that keep you inspired and fresh, let me know in the comments below!
