Boss Tip No. 3: It's really hard to say no
There’s a lot out there about having saying “YES!” to everything in your first year of business, but there’s not a lot out there about it being okay to say No once in a while.
Boss Tip No. 3 is all about saying no.
Saying “No” is extremely hard. As a designer and recovering people-pleaser, it’s even harder. It is definitely something I’ve struggled with this year.
I’ve said “Yes” to too much and in turn have had to say no to things I don’t want to say no to like family, friends and loved ones. In the past few months I’ve been a little more selective with my “YES!” usage to for the sake of my health and sanity. Even though that means saying declining cool projects or things that mean a lot to me, it makes room for other things that mean even more to me (like family and self love!). It’s hard as heck finding this compromise and balance. But it’s definitely okay to do and there’s too much negative stigma about saying no.
The biggest thing I recommend is figuring out what those big “YES!” items are for you. Then next time something comes up, ask yourself, “If I were doing this instead of [Insert YES! Item], is it worth it? Or would I rather be doing [Insert YES! Item]?”
So my Boss Tip for this week is less of a time and more just letting you know that it’s hard to overcome YESsyndrome, and you’re not alone. And guess what, it’s totally OKAY to say no.
